Dear JAmigans, as some developers have reported problems with compiling the gnu classpat= h and the JAmiga addons to it, we now provide a precompiled classpath at th= e download section (http://www.jamiga.org/sites/dl.php). You can use this file to unzip/untar it into the jamiga source folder. It is produced daily together with the daily source tarball. Please do not spread this information, as I get to pay for the bandwidth and the file is quite large (>2.5MB). (i.e. this is for developers only !!) Regards, Peter |

Dear JAmigans, it has been a very long time since our last email. We need to say thank you to all of you for staying with us and waiting so patiently. The good news is: JAmiga is still being worked on, we just haven't communicated very much in the last ... uhm ... 6 Months! We are however now approaching a state where we feel comfortable about releasing the next version of JAmiga. As a "preview" for all interested developers, we now do a daily snapshot of the cvs sources which can be downloaded from our website (http://www.jamiga.org/sites/dl.php). This is currently configured to compile on Classic and MorphOS systems. I'm still waiting for input about AmigaOS 4.0. It should run the classic version under emulation though. I want to draw your attention at the changes that will come with the upcoming version 0.0.5: The most important part is the (almost complete) implementation of a JNI Interface. This now allows everyone to write his/her own java native libraries. (Eventually, we can share the workload that way) Those libraries are built like regular amiga ".library" files. Please have a look at the readme before trying. The current compile process is quite complex. Regards, Peter Werno |

Dear JAmigans, we are still busily developing on the next release of JAmiga. As the next release date is approaching, I'd like to ask for volunteers to test the next version. Currently, we can only provide a 68K version, but as usual, we're planning to release AROS, AOS4, MOS and OS X versions. If you're interested, please contact me at in...@ja... Regards, Peter |

Dear JAmigans, we are proud to announce the release of the latest version alpha 0.0.3 of the Java Virtual Machine implementation "JAmiga". This version has been ported to gcc and now comes with some GUI support that was shown on some earlier screenshots, and the first GUI element, the Button. Some test classes are included to show how things work. However, please be aware that this version is still very unstable and might crash your machine badly. We are very happy if you send us your bug reports, either via email or by using our new forum on www.jamiga.org. (best if you supply some "mungwall/enforcer" information along with your post) Best regards, Your JAmiga Team |

Hi JAmiga developers, yesterday, we have finally managed to bring AWT Buttons to JAmiga. We are currently producing the package for the 0.0.3 release with one or two button-test classes. Before the "public" release, I'd like to have it tested on different configurations. So if you're interested, send me a quick reply. I'm intending to release 0.0.3 publically on Monday or Tuesday, so you only have 1 or 2 days for testing! Ciao, Peter Werno |

Dear JAmigans, we have slightly changed the mailing lists that we are using on sourceforge.net. Previously, we had used this (jamiga-developers) list for sending any kind of information, including announcements. In order to streamline the communication, we have added a new mailing list named jamiga-announce. All announcements (new versions, info, stuff that we consider as "useful news") will be sent on that new distribution list, while the "old" list jamiga-developers will be used for development discussion in the future. Please use the sourceforge.net website to update your subscription(s). (It may take a few hours until the new list is accessible from the sourceforge website. This is something beyond our control, so if you don't get there, hold yer horses :) ) Best regards, Peter Werno PS: Before I forget: We still have that 50Euro bounty open about writing a JAR/ZIP file reader. Consider signing up for it. Most is actually already done. All that remains to be done is the deflating algorithm (You will get two pointers, one points to the compressed data, you need to generate the uncompressed at the second pointer's position - that's all). You could even use the zlib sources to achieve this, money easily earned :) Please don't blindly start coding though, contact us, we send you the files that everything needs to go in! PPS: A few days after our last post, we have received another US$55 donations. We will put up a "thank you" site soon, please excuse that this hasn't happened so far, time is sometimes very rare! |

Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Dear JAmigans, it's been a long time since our last status email and things have become very quiet around JAmiga. However, a lot of work was done in the background. We have meanwhile ported JAmiga so that it can be compiled with gcc which will open up chances to compile it for other platforms. While being a major task, for most users no difference between the StormC and gcc version will be visible. We are planning to release a new version with the classpath 0.09 fairly soon, once all classpath-changes have been properly reflected within JAmiga. Eventually, you may be able to use a few AWT gadgets by then, but no promise about that :) *** New JAmiga Forum *** We now have our "own" Forum on www.jamiga.org which may be used for chitchat, discussions, requests, etc. *** First donation arrived *** Only a few days ago, we have received our first donation -100 EUR- wow. Thank you very much! We have therefore decided to put up bounties for certain tasks.... *** Bounty for ZIP File reader *** This bounty is endowed with EUR 50. It will go to the person that writes a ZIP Reading "JavaStream" class. Please see our Forum or contact us if you're willing to help! best regards, Peter Werno |

Dear JAmigans, JAmiga had some problems with the CVS Repository since we moved the repository to our own servers at www.jamiga.org. If anybody needs/wants access, please let me know individually by sending an email to me (in...@ja...). Please be aware that only developers and projects administrators will get write-access. If you need read-access only, we will provide a generic read-only account as well. Regards, Peter Werno |

Hello JAmigans, I have posted an email of Mark Wielaard (GNU Classpath Project - http://www.classpath.org) on the JAmiga website. Mark informs about the current status of the AWT and SWING implementation of GNU classpath. JAmiga is using its own AWT implementation, so you may skip the part on GTK. However, it will rely completey on the SWING implementation of the GNU classpath. Read it here: http://www.jamiga.org Regards, Peter Werno PS: Thanks Mark for allowing me to post your mail! |

Dear JAmigans, we have just uploaded three screenshots showing the new features of the upcoming version 0.0.3. The screenshots demonstrate some of the AWT Features that write something to the AWT Window. Please be patient while waiting for the next release, the work currently done on JAmiga will require a lot of tests before we are confident to publish it, so hold 'yer horses! We'll publish more screenshots as soon as some of the AWT Gadgets are implemented! Have a great weekend, Peter Werno |

Dear JAmigans, we are proud to announce the release of JAmiga 0.0.2 alpha! The new version features (amongst other improvements): * JIT now works on "real world" Amigas * Networking has been implemented (Only TCP Sockets for now though) A lot of bugs have been fixed thanks to some very active JAmiga users The AWT Project has only progressed slightly. The included TestFrame class now also resizes the Window :) Regards, Peter Werno |

Hello JAmigans, after releasing the Amiga version 0.0.1, we have now released the MAC version as well. The Mac version doesn't come with any AWT yet (and may never do so, depends on the time that we want to spend with it :) ) and it fails with some Threading calls. Please report any errors/bugs at the JAmuga sourceforge page (http://sourceforge.net/projects/jamiga) Regards, Peter Werno |

Dear JAmigans, we have just released a new version of JAmiga (Alpha 0.0.1). This is the first Alpha-Version and should be much more stable than previous releases. Also, we added the first class that opens an AWT Window (TestFrame.class) - however, this is about all that will work AWT-wise!! Some screenshots will follow shortly at http://www.jamiga.org/ Best regards, Peter Werno |

Dear JAmiga friends, some good news just before christmas: We have finally back-ported JAmiga from Mac to the Amiga again - and it works just great (even supports classpath 0.06 and will be ported to 0.07 soon). Downloads will be available early next year. If we manage to get it done by then, even with the first AWT-stuff working. So eventually, we'll be ready just when OS4 ships :) Anyway, I wish all of you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Yours, Peter Werno |

Hello JAmigans, after about 2 months of hard work we are proud to announce the first sneak preview of JAmiga for Mac OS X. You can download this version within the 0.0.0.0.1 - release on http://sf.net/projects/jamiga The Mac Version currently is very limited in features compared to the Amiga version (No JIT, only java.lang-natives). However, it already works with gnu classpath 0.06 which should soon be ported to the Amiga-version as well. Now that we have a Mac version, it shouldn't be long until the first PPC-JIT engine will be out (obviously cross-compiled for AOS4 and MOS as well). So stay tuned! Regards, Peter Werno |

Hi JAmigans, there is a bug in the currently available (0.0.0.0.1) version of JAmiga when using the JIT-engine. The "iinc" and the "goto" - opcode is translated incorrectly. This can cause severe crashes or incorrect results. There will be a new version available shortly that should fix those bugs. In the meantime, please use the non-jit version which does not have these bugs. Regards, Peter Werno |

Hello JAmigans, we have just released pre-alpha 0.0.0.0.1 (note there's one zero less :D ) This is the first version to feature a JIT engine. This first version will NOT be able to JIT-compile all opcodes, but some smaller methods should be compiled fine (I may include some tests in a separate tar.gz later, just try some things for now) Any developer here is kindly asked to test heavily. A source-tarball is also included. The most ugly problem I came across I actually require your help: src/JIT.cpp search the "case 0x12 // ldc" - line The ldc-command wreaks havoc in SOME cases when ldc-ing a String (e.g. when you try the MathTest-class or the Test-class (both enclosed in any tarball) As I spent quite a few days and nights with this, I'll actually give away a Tomb Raider (1) DVD (german version / RegionCode 2) for the first one to come up with a solution! (only valid 'til 30-Sep though, I'll put it on ebay after that :) ) Many thanks, Peter Werno |

Hello JAmigans, the "Native method How-To" is now available at http://www.jamiga.org/documents/native.pdf But be warned, it's full of spelling mistakes :-) Ciao, Peter Werno |

Hello JAmigans, two things are currently on my mind about the JAmiga project. I am quite interested in getting your feedback on these... 1) Native method How-To I am currently compiling a document that describes how to implement native methods for JAmiga. As JAmiga currently does not support JNI, a different approach had to be made for native methods. This document will give you an overview on how to write the supplementary C++-classes and how to integrate them into the VM. That way we should be able to better distribute jobs amongst us and somebody may actually already start working on a couple of AWT-classes. I'll post the document on the sourceforge - site when it is ready (which should still be a few days as I have other things to do first :-) ) - I'll send out another mail when it is available... 2) Bug-Testing, etc. I have seen that nobody so far has downloaded the latest release xxx.6 which should be doing multithreading just fine. HOWEVER, it (multiple threads) still won't work with sockets for me. I really need your input if it fails for you as well. Also: Please look at the code (especially Socket.cpp) if you can find a reason for the problem. It doesn't make much sense starting anything with GUI before we haven't got threading working correctly, as GUI will most certainly require threading! Regards, Peter Werno |

Hello JAmigans, we have just released version pre-alpha 0.0.0.0.0.6 Though the version-number is still quite low, a lot of packages/native implementations have been added in this release. Please start testing it with all kinds of java-stuff that you have (except for applications that is use AWT or javax.* - stuff, as this is not implemented yet)! Please report on the sourceforge.net - site if you come across any problems! Regards, Peter |
