AFAIK there is a flag that will cause pppd to print status
information to the console instead of the log files - look
for it in the ppp man page
chat can be invoked to do the same...
I think 5.1 fixes the logging problems; someone might want
to request a bug fix if pppd isn't getting logged properly
Pugfantus will have a pppd fix out soon. AFAIK pppd doesn't
even work in any releases, 5.1 inclusive.
