Preferences are stored using the Java Preferences API. In practice this means they are stored in the registry in Windows and in the ~/.java folder in unix.

The Preferences node depends on the type of preference. Many preferences are stored in the java package for the present Chip class, e.g. ch.unizh.ini.caviar.chip.retina if you are current using one of the retina classes.
