When? Directly after startup or while working with JabRef?

Which java version does Ubuntu currently offer? I.e., what is the
output of "java -version"?

Could you try the latest official release
https://sourceforge.net/projects/jabref/files/jabref/2.11.1/? Or the
latest development build available at
http://builds.jabref.org/master/?

I assume, that nothing of that helps. Could you export your
preferences and send them to me?
