I suppose you have a Java version lower than 8. You can check it by
running "java -verison" on the command line or checking the list of
installed software.

Are you at Linux or Windows? If Windows, just install JabRef via the
exe provided at http://builds.jabref.org/install4j/. It should
automatically install Java8. Alternatively, install Java8 from
http://www.java.com/ and try again.
