Hi. date/year should be treated as one of those either-or fields, like author/editor for bibtex book entries (but not biblatex; biblatex books always have author(s), no editor(s); differences between bibtex and biblatex are sometimes very subtle; indeed, in biblatex, proper treatment would be something like [date|year[month[day]]]).
