Please enable Text Box Functionality in the "Look in" bar on the "Open File" dialogue.

I have frequently argued that reliance on a limited drop down menu for the open file dialogue is inefficient for opening files because it does not allow for easy location of network resources. in my situation, the bibtex database is accessed by a VPN, it wiould be much faster for me to simply enter the ip and drive directly into the top bar rather than click the dropdown and be forced to browse to network and wait 5 minutes for my computer to detect the shares if they are visible to it at all.

Do you mean "File > Open Database"? Which operating system do you use? Here, on Windows 8, I can key in something in the "File" field.

Maybe you should go to "Options > Preferences > Advanced > 'File dialog'" and check "Use native file dialog". Possibly, that does help.

the issue with keying into the file field means that you need to know the entire path.

i am referring to adding something similar to how windows explorer works where you can simply type a partial path into the top bar and it will either suggest or open the folder in the browser
