(Sorry if this is reported earlier; I browsed feature
requests and did not find anything.)
In the entry table, it would be good to
show "booktitle" for "inproceedings" entries. And
naturally it is good to show "journal" for "article"
entries. I could add a new column "booktitle" in the
entry table, but having both journal and booktitle
takes up a lot of screen space. However, these two
fields are usually mutually exclusive, so they could
be shown in the same column in the entry table.
Similarly, for edited works with no author, it would
be good to show the "editor" field instead of the
empty author field. And for manuals and such with no
author or editor, showing "organization" instead
would be a good idea.
Thus, it would be useful to have a possibility to
configure entry table columns such as the following:
"author or editor or organization"
"journal or booktitle"
Given a list of alternative fields for a column,
JabRef could find the first field that is nonempty
and display it.
Some additional thoughts: Sorting by a
column "journal or booktitle" might make more sense
if it would first show all entries with the "journal"
field and then all entries with no "journal" but
a "booktitle" field and so on. Not sure if this is
the case with "author or editor", though...

Hello,
I second this proposal. This would make Jabref much more usable for workshop and conference papers in particular, which are much more prevalent in some fields.

Lars
