Yes, indeed, Sateh.com was the culprit. It is in the list of mirrors of 
the central maven repository, but it hasn't been accessible since 
yesterday.
I configured it a year ago using a settings.xml file in my *home* 
directory so even installing a new, clean maven version didn't help.
