How about adding a Split Window(s) with one shell running in
each portion -- Similar to Spliting a window in XEmacs or project
builder for that matter. Now that would be cool!
The first thing I noticed is that ProjectBuilder-style
splitting will be substantially more difficult to
implement than Terminal style splitting. I'm not
sure that PB-style splitting (where the two views
can be independent and hold different sessions)
is really very necessary -- we can already move
tabs between windows, so it's easy enough to use
two windows to compare two sessions.
Terminal-style splitting, where a single session is
split and the top view can scroll but the bottom view
cannot and always shows the last line, is much easier
to implement and is probably what people need most
anyway.
Thoughts & opinions?
In any case, I'll do terminal-style splitting first, and when
it's working well, then possibly evolve to splitting with
independent views (and possibly > 2 views in a window)

It's been about 16 months. Any idea when this might appear
in a shipping version? Also, I would like to see the ability
to toggle a multi-tabbed window into a multi-split window so
I can see (for example) multiple builds progress on
different sessions. Sorry if it's a pain to implement but I
realized this morning that it's what I need. The next best
thing of course is to break them into different windows,
re-size them and nest them together. Perhaps a hot key that
does that for you would be the next best thing. Another
possible suggestion would be a slide out sheet where you
Option-click a different tab and a sheet slides out the
bottom of the window with the bottom half of the other tab
displayed as the window resizes proportional to the sliding
area. Clicking on the active tab could return things to
normal. Remember this is a 12 inch screen Powerbook user's
perspective.

I just started using this feature in the linux terminal, Terminator (screenshot: http://www.tenshu.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/2008-08-17-terminator.png\) and I love it. Please add this feature to iTerm so I can use it when I'm at the office using OS x.
No mac terminal program that I've been able to find supports split screen terminal support.
This'd make iterm perfect in my book.
