Basically, instead of just saying login #0, login #1, etc to be able to
put in text, say up to 12 characters, just so that it makes easy to
identify the tab your looking for...

Have you tried using the "Configure" menu item?

Ya, but its not the same, and a pain in the ass when you have to open
configure each time for 12 different windows...

So what do you propose? Edit the tab name in place by just clicking on the
name? That's a little difficult to do. Why not use xterm escape sequences to
set the PROMPT_COMMAND variable in your shell under xterm emulation?
iTerm picks that up and uses it for the tab title. In my .bashrc, I have:

    PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033]0;${PWD}\007"'

So my tabs display the current PWD.

Gets really hard to do when it is logging into remote server ,and may login to
one, and use that to login to another...

Well, then I am not sure I am seeing any alternatives here...

thats where the renaming of the tab in the window without going into
    configure comes in to play.

    alternately just download mine at

    http://chemistry.ucsc.edu/~wgscott/settitle.csh

then in your .cshrc file just put in the line

    source /Users/yourname/whereveryouputit/settitle.csh

and make sure the file is executable, ie.,

    chmod a+x settitle.csh

Yeah, means I need to put it on every machine I work on, or do before I login
    to it....

Still think there should be the ability to rename the tabs direct from the
    window.

I agree it would be nice to have that option as a preference.

Meanwhile this takes 30 seconds to install per machine and then you are
    done forever.

I'll put this into pending. It's a relative minor issue but
requires quite some work to achive. We could consider doing
    it in the future.
