The event is open to the general public at no cost. See information below. * VIRTUAL STORYTELLING February 20, 7p.m. Brunier Museum* Dr. Carolina Cruz-Neira Associate Professor Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Virtual Reality Applications Center The Virtual Reality Applications Center at Iowa State University has been applying virtual reality to the arts and humanities for many years. Working in the areas of Virtual Heritage and Storytelling we can show how long-lost places looked like, we can virtually travel to remote world locations to visit a sacred place, or we can aid on restoration efforts of historical landmarks. Additionally, our work involves creating technology that can be taken outside the boundaries of our research laboratories and shared with the public through instalations in Museums. The exhibit currently installed at the ISU Brunier Museum showcases our latests technology: a low-cost easy-to-move virtual reality system. In this system, we are showing two virtual reality storytelling applications: Ashes to Ashes and the Virtual Hindu Temple. Ashes to Ashes is a memorial to 9/11 that invited those who endured the tragedy of the September 11th attacks to tell their stories of survival. The stories are the basis for the development of the immersive environment that captures the horror of that day and celebrates the resilience of the human spirit as the healing from that horror continues. The Virtual Hindu Temple integrates a realistic model of the Hindu temple of Radharaman in Vrindavan with simulations of the ceremonies that are held at the temple. It provides a virtual experience of a Hindu Temple equivalent to visiting the actual temple accompanied by an expert. Dr. Cruz-Neira, accompanied by members of her research team will discuss details about the instalation and the process of creating the applications. During the talk, the public will be welcome to participate in the discussion. --- To subscribe or unsubscribe, send email to maj...@vr... with this in the BODY of the message: subscribe massmail -OR- unsubscribe massmail --- |
