hmm. when I then try to find the ill-behaving channel with alsamixer my whole
system responds really slow, too.

I personally experience some problems which I cannot pinpoint an origin for. I guess they originate in a spinlock problem. The major tests you should perform are: 1) try using both SAM pcm channels (hw:?,1 & hw:?,2) at the same time, for a longer duration (e.g. 2 alsaplayers with a long playlist) 2) try using the maestro pcm (hw:?,0) in addition to point 1. This should mess things up 3) try starting & stopping a program several times, while other pcm channels are playing, with different fragment sizes, etc... I have the impression that once you open a channel with a specified fragment size, and then close it, you can't use another fragment size on a subsequent open of the channel. jackd should be a nice test too. I also have to comment on the driver's quality: it's actually based on the driver I use to research the card, i.e. there are lot's of things commented out, added, or changed. I therefore lost the 'general overview' of the driver... it's more like: it works, but don't ask me why. Once I have enough information on the card, I'll write a new driver from scratch, which will be a lot cleaner than the current. I'm currently working on the MIDI & Synth parts of the SAM chip, and I still have to figure out how to use the studio firmware (it used to work, but now it doesn't). Still lot's of research ahead. This means that the rewrite will have to wait for a while. Good news: I've finally succeeded in completing a beta version of the ISIS driver. It's only functional with the pci64.bin firmware (i.e. multimedia mode, not studio). Everything works, except recording from the rack (not possible with windows drivers either in MM mode) and the MIDI synthesizer doesn't work either. There are some bugs in the driver, for sure. Please let me know what & how it occurred. Installation: 1) download the file alsa-driver-0.9.5-isis.tar.bz2 from the sourceforge project page (http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/isisalsa) this file is a modified version of the ALSA 0.9.5 driver package. You'll also need the other ALSA driver files, available at www.alsa-project.org. 2) unpack it, and follow the procedure outlined in the ALSA docs for installation 3) use maxiinit to load the pci64.bin firmware to the card (e.g. maxiinit /etc/isis/pci64.bin) 4) load the isis driver: (as root) "modprobe snd-isis" it should work. If it doesnt, please send me the output of the kernel log ("dmesg") and the PCI configuration ("lspci -v"), and a description of the problem, so I can try and figure out the problem. Device info: pcm device 0 = ESS Maestro PCM (Playback & Capture) pcm device 1 = SAM 1/2 PCM (mixed with Maestro PCM by firmware) (Playback only) pcm device 2 = SAM 3/4 PCM (Playback only) Midi should also work Joystick also Enjoy, Pieter PS: I'm working on the Studio mode driver, but that mode is even less documented. Could be a while before I get this straigt. |

Hi all, As I was getting very bored with my books, I played around a little with the isisalsa driver. And guess what... I managed to get some wave audio output out off the SAM chip. Not that spectacular you might think, but this is one of the major problems I was facing. So now that I know how to supply audio data to the SAM chip, I can start to integrate this into the ALSA framework. After my exams. I still need to work on the firmware loader, because it doesn't work that good. To get it working, I first have to boot into windows, so the ISIS gets initialised by the windows drivers. Then I need to do a soft reboot and boot into linux. This way the bootloader (maxiinit) works. anyway, ciao Pieter |

Hi Jimmy, Thank you very much for your work! It would really be nice to get that card supported and running at least in some way under Linux. I would volunteer to add support to the sam9407 package, but unfortunately, I am currently moving overseas and all my computer equipment is in storage for the next 2-3 months. If noone else tried adding support until then, I should be more than happy to help, assuming I can allocate some spare time. Nice schematic! I only had time to do a quick review, and it looks quite complete. There are a few minor things that still have to be checked: - The positive opamp input of IC8C and IC8D are not connected to ground on the schematic, but connected together and floating (due to the high input impedance of the opamp). This cannot be correct. As the opamp circuits look like typical virtual ground circuits, I think they should. or at least be connected to some DC offset source like IC8B and IC8D. - th eMPU401 port on the maestro, is it really not connected? I'll put them on the HW page as soon as possible. Pieter |

Either in the ALSA CVS, or in a seperate CVS. The former would be easier for the users, because the integration with the normal ALSA tree is maintained. But I don't know if I can get developers access to the ALSA CVS tree. Still have to ask for it. Should I use a seperate CVS, I'll have to provide means to integrate the driver with the ALSA build, and I'm no hero in the Makefile world. I'll keep you posted. Hi all, maybe a some amongst you ask themselves if I'm still alive. Well, I am. And I'm still working on the ISIS drivers. But I also have to finish my master thesis by may 19, and it still needs a lot of work. So I don't have that much time for the ISISALSA project. Nevertheless, I'm making progress. I'm currently working on the streaming audio playback, and I'm getting results. When this is finished I'll release an alpha driver. This driver will support: - The complete maestro chip - Most of the cards volume/monitoring controls (console 8/4 functionallity) - Streaming audio playback I'll then start to work on the streaming audio record, MIDI i/o and the static audio device (sampler). greetz, Pieter |
