#15 Cannot open mailbox

I have it configured to run with imap and unix stile
mailboxes. I am running 2.1.0 on Debian unstable.

I compiled it from the tar file using lesstif for the
library. When I run it this is the first thing that
pops up:

Folder "/var/spool/mail/bschramm" cannot be locked
and will be opened read-only.
Permission denied

Then it comes back with this:

Could not create index file
"/var/spool/mail/.bschramm-idx".
Permission denied

Could not create index file
"/var/spool/mail/.bschramm-idx".
Permission denied

My file permistions are set as follows:
