At present an Author Directory page such as www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?Kl for "Kl" does not offer any links to get to other Author Directory pages nor can one return to the main directory grid other than by editing the URL.
The feature request would be that from "Kl" we would have
Author Directory: Prev (Kj), Up (K), Next (Kk), Home
"Prev" would back up one letter to a page that has authors. For example, if we are on [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?Kl Kl] then Kk is empty and so Prev would go to [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?Kj Kj].
"Up" would remove the last letter. From [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?Kl Kl] "Up" would be [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?K K]. If we are at the first letter then "Up" could get replaced with the word "Home."
"Next" would go to the next letter that has authors. For example, if we are on [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?Kl Kl] then Kk is empty and so Next would go to [http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?Km Km].
"Home" goes to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/directory.cgi.
Both "Prev" and "Next" would wrap. for example, ... Py <--> Qu <--> ... Zy <--> Aa.
Drilling down would be cool. From "K"
Author Directory: Prev (J), Home, Next (L). Down to: Ka|Kb|Kc|Kd|Ke|Kf|Kg|Kh|Ki|Kj|Kk|Kl|Km|Kn|Ko|Kp|Kq|Kr|Ks|Kt|Ku|Kv|Kw|Kx|Ky|Kz
The "Down to:" would be styled like the main directory colors.

Single character directories put a significant load on the server and have been blocked as of 2010-05-29, patch r2010-32. The "Home" functionality was implemented in r2010-32. "Prev" and "Next" look desirable, but someone else will have to code them since my knowledge of Python's bitmaps is lacking.
The ability to go to the next and previous sub-pages implemented in:
