Put the line:
down /bin/false

in your /etc/network/interfaces. It will prevent the interface actually =
being shut down.

What I ended up doing on my systems was just removing Kxxnetwork from =
/etc/init.d/rc3.d and /etc/init.d/rc5.d - this means networking never =
actually gets shut down but the rest of the system goes down clean. =
