I recommend this and set this up for a few friends and I get all kinds of complaints about it:

When you enter your password, it needs to check it right then and there.

If it tries to connect and the password is wrong, a alert is not appropriate. It should queue up the submission and change the color of the menubar icon and wait for as long as it takes for the user to put their password in.
