I find it surprising that you are using the irtty module
alone. Most people have either FIR hardware (anf therefore use one of
the FIR driver instead) or a serial dongle (and therefore need an
additional dongle driver).
So, try to find which drivers you were using, otherwise, try
to find what hardware it is.

I am now trying the FIR driver but I'm getting a wrong chip error:-
Jan 24 13:30:53 bodger kernel: nsc-ircc, Found chip at base=0x398
Jan 24 13:30:53 bodger kernel: nsc-ircc, Wrong chip version 16
but findchip reports:-
/root# findchip -v
Found NSC PC87338 Controller at 0x398, DevID=0x0b, Rev. 3
SIR Base 0x2f8, FIR Base 0x2f8
IRQ = 0, DMA = 3
Enabled: yes, Suspended: no
UART compatible: yes
Half duplex delay = 0 us
Which reflects the BIOS settings. My modprobe.conf has:-
alias irda0 nsc-ircc irq=0 dma=3 io=0x398
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
