I wish to know if it is possible to boot a x86 PC from its USB device (which is my iPod). I'm doing this because I wish to put a Linux dist (e.g. Fedora Core 2) installation discs in the iPod. As long as I connect my iPod to a PC, I can install a Linux box via only connect my iPod to that PC.
But, I also want my iPod functioned as it is/was. My iPod is a 20GB (4th generation) one. There is plenty room for a Linux distribution disc (2-3 GB at most), the remaining problem is how to configure the boot loader to let me switch between the normal apple firmware and my own boot sector (a linux kernel, maybe).
Is it possible? (Thanks in advance for any replying)
:-)

Hi,
it's not possible to boot your PC from your iPod. You would have to overwrite the ipod's boot sector but then you could not use it normally anymore.

LILO and other bootloaders allow to choose what partition to boot.
altough i know that there arent any "partitions", im quite sure that it is theoretically possible to write such "boot selector".
BTW:
when it will be possible to compile the linux kernel for your "portable data system", and kernel will detect on which architecture it is booted?
