I'd be quite happy to see a gettext based prototype put
together.  I know there have been some problems (although
I'm not sure of the specifics) using non Latin based
character sets with Microwindows but even if we could get a
basic screen with German/French/Timbucktooey on it running
on the iPod that would be a great start.
