The "Executing finished, Exiting" is normal. The rc script is finished and so it prints that. The custome eth1394 module is required on _all_ kernel versions. Sorry, I don't have any (recent) experience with Debian but the kernel module should compile against a 2.6.2 or newer kernel I think.
