[Ipodlinux-devel] installing applications

I looked through the Documentations and the Forums and I cannot seem to find how to install user tools (i.e. ipp package, SoX, etc.) onto the iPod...any tutorials? Any help would be appreciated, my guess would be to gunzip/untar/install it in the / filesystem...
