I've had a brief look at the firmware for the mini and I'd guess that the hardware differences are about similar as those from 2g to 3g. E.g. it will take some hacking to get things going. There are two big hurdles though, firstly they have changed the boot loader and from first impressions it looks as though there is some special header required on the OS image. The second problem is that the bootloader and diagnostic images appear to be encoded somehow. As you say being able to run as a host makes things a bit more interesting...
