Next/Openstep used a different approach as there was no window manager
as on X11, but the effect basically is the same.
GWorkspace propably creates a window at NSDesktopWindowLevel (level
-1000) and uses that to display the background. Alternatively, you could
probably run a window manager in root-less mode, eg. like OroborOSX does
on Mac OS X.
