Summary: Crash when selecting font

Initial Comment:
After starting a new file with Inkscape, and drawing a
text box, when I begin selecting a font, after about 5
seconds, Inkscape crashes without warning. Also, when
I'm selecting a font, a new "inkscape.exe" opens in my
taskbar. If it helps, I have added fonts to Windows,
but I doubt that's the problem. The fonts I've added
are from the following link:

I hope this problem is fixed soon.

Same problem here, with windows xp sp2. Font drop-down
preview list works well under linux (inkscape 0.44.1), but
does not on windows (inkscape 0.44.1). I could not find any
specific font causing this issue. The only workaround I
found out is to use the text tool which is not affected by
this problem instead of the little drop down list. In fact
Inkscape handls my fonts correctly, but the preview list has
some nasty bug. If any debug information has to be provided,
please tell me how to debug inkscape under windows.

Yep, me too!  I'm running Inkscape 0.44.1 on an eMac with OS
X 10.3.9.  As soon as I try and select a font Inkscape just
crashes out completely.

Steps to reproduce:

* draw two paths;
* group them;
* move the group to a different location;
* select tool for path nodes editor;
* select multiple nodes from one path;
* make selected nodes symetric;
* undo twice.

The view will be out of synch.

Product vers: Inkscape 0.44, built Oct  9 2006
OS: Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) 2.6.17-10-386

reinstalling but nevertheless Inkscape should never crash.

Steps: Just start the program and (apparently) have a

Agreed, inkscape should be uncrashable at least in theory. 
In practise making it uncrashable might be impractical and
far more time consuming than it is worth.  

at a glance it looks like your problem could have been fixed
by deleting or otherwise removing your inkscape
preferences.xml file rather than needing a full reinstall.  
(should add that to the FAQ as a big thing to try when
troubleshooting startup errors.)

When you say "apparently read only" have you tested this
theory by deliberately setting the file as read-only?  

Do you have a copy of the dodgy preferences.xml file that
caused this problem?

Please make sure to try out the latest version of Inkscape
before requesting new features as Inkscape is improving all
the time.  You mention 0.22 but you have not told us what
version you are using at the moment, please give us more
information.  

At the time of writing the current version of inkscape is
0.44 and 0.45 is due out soon.  Nighly builds are also
available for testing purposes.  Work done to help with non
Latin languages should help many users not just Arabic users
and things may have been greatly improved.  

The chances of bugs being fixed in older versions is
extremely slim, most likely you would need to hire someone.
 Upgrading is highly recommended.    

Please also try checking through existing requests to avoid
filing duplicate reports.

I just downloaded Inkscape .44.1 and tried opening an image that was 
created in Adobe Illustrator and saved in the AI format. Instantly and 
"Information" box popped up stating:

The error message is a big usability problem for sure. 
Support for the AI file is another question altogether.  

Please try not to file anonymous requests.  instead please
get an account and login so we can ask for follow up
information if necessary.  

Please make sure to try out the latest version of Inkscape
before requesting new features as Inkscape is improving all
the time.  
Please do try to mention what versions of Inkscape you have
used and if you have tested with nightly builds please
mention the build dates.  

What versions of Adobe Illustrator have you used?  There are
two major types of files which use the .ai file extension
but are actually very different.  
Please attach a sample file to this report or post it on a
web page somewhere (see "Upload and Attach a File:" which
should be included near the bottom of the tracker page).  

What operating system are you using?  Macintosh? 
Taking a rough guess from the nonsense error message it
looks like Perl is expecting ImageMagick to be installed but
not finding it but it is strange that you get this error
message rather than being told you do not have the necessary
prerequisites installed to import AI files.  

Others may reply in more detail, I'm replying quickly to
ensure you get an answer of some kind but without knowing
for sure if anyone is reading this message I have not looked
into this matter in great detail.  If you keep working at it
you may be able to get things installed correctly and get
this to work but the feature may not be available for your
platform.

I did write an extension to deform a path along another
one: for instance, you can draw a straight snake, and
use this to give it its final wavy shape...

Thanks a lot, this is an excellent extension! I'm sure users
will find it extremely useful in a lot of cases. Some requests:

- Please remove debug output :)

- Can you allow the "space between copies" to be negative?

- I'm thinking of the best name for it. It's so versatile :)
For example, "Deform/Stretch/Repeat" seems to be more
descriptive, what do you think?

- In the UI, it needs to be made more explicit that
stretching and repeating are mutually exclusive, and if you
select one you need to deselect the other. I don't know if
the extensions UI can use radio buttons; if it can, please
use them. Otherwise, at least add some verbal indications
explaining this.

I added two more options to make it easier to use: you can
define an offset in both the normal and tangential directions.
This was determined from the relative postions of the
objects in the previous version, but was less intuitive...

It works now pretty much like a new kind of stroke: you can
use any path(s) as a "stroke pattern".

Summary: Stroke width after Union changed in a strange way

As shown in the attached file, the stroke width changes
after union, intersection etc.

I have two shapes with the same stroke width and get a
shape with thicker line. Other properties are ok -
copied from the lower object.

I searched the Inkscape web site and the web, but I
didn't find the answer. I tried with Inkscape
preferences > Transform > Scale stroke width on and off.

I suppose, it is a bug.

And... thanks for Inkscape. I am going to buy a black
or gray T-shirt and/or sweatshirt, but until now I

That's a difficult one. Using clones as clippaths is
certainly allowed in SVG, but Inkscape dies of infinite
recursion when it runs into such a thing. First, the
object's bbox is clipped by the clippath bbox, so it calls
clippath bbox; that in turn calls the clippath of the clone;
but clone calls the original object's bbox again, etc. If we
fix this, a similar infinite loop happens with _show
methods: sp_item_invoke_show -> sp_clippath_show ->
sp_item_invoke_show on clippath -> sp_use_show ->
sp_item_invoke_show again, etc.

It seems that opening an SVG file that has one or more
objects in it that have the blur filter applied, using
the Open file dialog makes Inkscape crash right after I
click on the Open button.

When it crashes, this is printed on the console:

Oddly enough it does not crash if I open the file if I
specify the filename on the command line (inkscape

I'm running Linux and have compiled Inkscape from SVN
(~2006-10-19 23:00).

Steps to reproduce:

- Open Inkscape
- Create a simple object or path
- Apply the blur filter to it (CTRL+SHIFT++F and drag
the blur slider)
- Save the file
- Open the file that was just saved using the Open
dialog (CTRL+O)
- Right after it loads the file, Inkscape crashes

In a project I am working on, in which we use 
inkscape frequently!, another party has some similar 
code as given below, this does not show correctly in 
inkscape. I have downloaded the 0.44pre3 release.

The following svg part does not show correctly in 
inkscape.

this is not a bug. when loading the snippet, you'll see on
the commandline a warning about an unimplemented style
property. we do not claim full standard conformance. 

however, you might be interested in hearing that a Summer of
Code student is well on his way to implement blurring.

Summary: Pathdeform extension

Initial Comment:
I did write an extension to deform a path along another
one: for instance, you can draw a straight snake, and
use this to give it its final wavy shape...

There are many more applications of course...

I added two more options to make it easier to use: you can
define an offset in both the normal and tangential directions.
This was determined from the relative postions of the
objects in the previous version, but was less intuitive...

It works now pretty much like a new kind of stroke: you can
use any path(s) as a "stroke pattern".
