Adam, thank you for writing this utility.  I tried to get other Yahoo IMAP proxies working but yours is easy to get going (assuming you know how to run a java vm.)  I'll post some steps for others on what I did to get it working on the Mac.

I'm using Mac OSX 10.6.4.  I got it to work on Thunderbird but it definitely does not work with Mac Mail.  However, on Thunderbird, performance is very slow.  My Yahoo mailbox is probably about 4GB and downloading that amount of info just brought it to a halt.  I'm getting all kinds of Growl messages from Thunderbird that the server has timed out.  I left Thunderbird and ImapIdProxy running all night to see if they could grind through all the data, but in the morning it had only downloaded about 40 messages from my Inbox and that was about it.

    Hi bluedws
Thanks for trying it out and posting the instructions.

    - There seems to be a bug with large folders.  My Yahoo account is pretty small, so I've not really hit this.  However it's clearly a top priority.  Another user is also hitting and has offered to debug, so I hope I can offer a fix soon.

    - And there seems to be a bug when using with Mac Mail.  I don't have a Mac myself.  The next step if you were willing would be to get a debug log.  To get that, edit ImapIdProxy.properties and uncomment the line "Debug".  You will get a file ImapIdProxy.log, it might be pretty big.  That's the file I need, but, beware, with debug logging turned on (but NOT normally), the log may contain your Yahoo ID and password, so I'd advise you to search and replace them with **** if you see them.

    Cheers
    Adam

I couldn't a find the right discussion thread where to direct this request. I recently started to use ImapIDProxy and I am very happy with this great tool. I wasn't vewry sure how to put that to work so I just spend some time with it till I got it right. I have written a blog post on how to setup Free Yahoo! Mail account with Thunderbird on Windows which is in Albanian - would it be OK to post it here so more people can follow a step-by-step guide? Here is my link: http://gjergjikokushta.com/2010/12/16/konfiguro-yahoomail-llogarite-falas-me-thunderbird/
I can translate that to English and post it here? What do you think?

    Hi Gjergji
I'm glad you find the tool useful.

The case of Windows+Thunderbird is likely to be a common one, so yes a translation to English would be useful.  I can't understand your words, but I can see you have some nice screenshots.  So please do post it in the help Forum.

It is also good to have instructions in Albanian (or any languages other than English), thanks.  Maybe you could reply to your English instructions post with a link to the Albanian, so that readers of the help Forum can find it?

One day I might create a proper Web Site for IMAPIDProxy.   If I do, please can I use your instructions (with credit to you of course)?

    Regards Adam

    Hi,

I tried to use IMAPIDProxy with Thunderbird from PortableApps, version 3.1.7, on Windows Vista. What I did:

    1- Download and extract IMAPIDProxy.

2- Open ImapIdProxy.properties, uncomment the two lines for the yahoo server

    3- Create a shortcut to
    C:\Windows\System32\javaw.exe -jar "D:\Appls_MyDocs2\ImapIdProxy\ImapIdProxy.jar"
and double clik it. According to the Task Manager, the proxy is running.

4- Create an Imap account, doing e.g. what is shown in the screenshots from Gjergji (and same as what I did to configure a gmail Imap accout that works well).

When I try to read Yahoo email, I get "Login to server localhost failed - Retry / Enter new password / Cancel". Any hinst about what is wrong?

    Thanks a lot

    Hi Sancho
I am the adam-p-s (the developer) but I am currently away from my main computer, so I am using a temporary login.  Thanks for trying the software.

If you want help, you should really create a new post in the help forum.  This forum is for general discussion.  Anyway I'll give you the best answer I can with the information I have available.

    1) You should not normally need to edit ImapIdProxy.properties at all (although it does no harm if you do it correctly).  Try going back to the original file.

    2) Double-check the values you typed into Thunderbird when you created the account.  In particular, did you get the right port?

    3) You could run "netstat -a -b" to check is listed as listening for connections on the right port.

If you are still stuck, please create a new post in the help forum, with as many details as possible.

    Cheers
    Adam
