Martijn, Thanks for explaining this. I agree with what you have listed down here. It's good to see that we do have plans to have some serious community users. I understand that it's clearly a long way to go before we can think of that. As long as we have that as one of our goals, it doesn't matter how long it takes to reach there :) Obviously, the entire community needs to provide help in any way possible to make the product usable within the community. -Jaikiran On Fri, Oct 23, 2009 at 4:46 PM, <mar...@gm...> wrote: > Hi Jaikiran, > > This is a very good question, I look at it this way (others may disagree!). > > At the moment I think we have 3 types of users: > > 1.) Hi Jaikiran, This is a very good question, I look at it this way (others may disagree!). At the moment I think we have 3 types of users: 1.) Community Developers - All of us on this mailing list. 2.) Community Users (Non serious / Test / Evaluation) - We have only one user in this category who is a part of the Mizuho group. 3.) Community Users (Serious) - We only have one user in this category and that is Mizuho International (who of course have the full time support of the core committers). Note I've deliberately not include 'paying' users because I think that's out of scope at this stage (and raises all sorts of other issues). However, in theory that sometime in the future there's no reason why members of this community could not offer professional services and support for Ikasan, for example in Pune - India....... :p So I think that Ikasan is ready to increase numbers of users of types 1.) and 2.) but we need to improve the software/documentation and grow the community for type 3.) users. How to attract new users is also a question that needs to be answered, on other projects I've been involved with there's always been an evangelist of sorts who starts 'selling' the project. So one of the original goals (if you remember from the Welcome Letter) was to get other serious production users of Ikasan. Therefore a bunch of our themes in the Roadmap will address issues that make it possible for type 3.) users to be able to use Ikasan in a serious production environment without needing the full time support of the core committers (as is currently the case). I would see that magical point in time as culminating in release 1.0.0 but until we have the first meeting on Tuesday to start discussing the initial Roadmap (and please do give us your input on this) I can't even begin to guesstimate a date for this. I hope that made sense? Do people have any questions or concerns over this? Just to be more specific, by users i meant community users and not production/paid customers. I think, now is the right time to ask one of the question i had for some time now :) Now that we are discussing Roadmaps, do we have something planned in terms of getting a user base for Ikasan? I mean, do we have something planned about how we are going to target users to use this community software and provide feedback? Or maybe, which version of Ikasan would be stable enough for end users to start trying out? -Jaikiran On Thu, Oct 22, 2009 at 9:58 PM, <mar...@gm...> wrote: > Hi all, > > We've had several new project team members helping solve issues for Ikasan > in the recent weeks but unfortunately we were not managing the JIRAs and > what could be tackled as well as we'd have liked. Hi all, We've had several new project team members helping solve issues for Ikasan in the recent weeks but unfortunately we were not managing the JIRAs and what could be tackled as well as we'd have liked. So we've put up a short section on how we want to manage the Roadmap and the subsequent JIRAs that make up that Roadmap: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ikasaneip/index.php?title=Administrators We intend on holding our first meeting next Tuesday to try and come up with a scope for 0.9.0 and 0.10.0 and to put a release date on 0.8.0. Your feedback as to what you'd like to see in the next versions of Ikasan is certainly welcome and we especially encourage the usage of the "Vote" link on individual JIRA issues to promote them to our attention. Hopefully after this first meeting we'll have a clearer picture of where we are going and therefore what JIRAs we should be tackling. Any questions, comments etc please don't hesitate to send them in! Cheers, Martijn |

Hi all, Kerry Kenneally is a Graphic and UI designer that has volunteered to look at various design and UI aspects of our project. She'll be starting with a style guide for Ikasan EIP which will cover both documentation, consoles and every other aspect of Ikasan branding. With her being the first non-developer to join the project team it's quickly become obvious that our Wiki is very developer focussed in terms of team members joining. So I'll be spending the next couple of days rearranging pages, renaming pages/sections and probably performing a few edits. In particular I'll be adding a section for designers that want to join the project. It's nice to see we're already getting a wider range of community members, good stuff! Cheers, Martijn |

Hi all, My employer has kindly allowed me to work one day a week from home on a Monday. In part this is to provide better real-time support for community for those in different timezones to the UK. So generally you'll see me on IRC MON: 1100-2100+ TUE-FRI: 0900-1800 GMT So for those of you who are in the +5.00/+5.30GMT timezone, Mondays is a good day to get extended support on IRC. If the majority of the community would prefer a different day we can look into that. Cheers, Martijn -- Sent from Greater London, United Kingdom |
