Category: None Group: 3.0.x Status: Open Priority: 5 Submitted By: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: runaway behavior on Windows ME Initial Comment: I use Privoxy 3.0.3 on Windows ME (obtained in July 2005), with a dial-up (PPP) ISP connection. I use Opera 5.12 or FireFox 1.0.5, with the HTTP (and, for Opera, HTTPS) proxy set to 127.0.0.1 port 8118 or localhost port 8118. When I start up either browser for the first time, the Privoxy main log window sometimes starts rapidly adding repeated lines readying "Request: localhost:8118*" or "Request: 127.0.0.1:8118*" (depending on which form I have asked my browser to use). If I close the browser, the "requests" continue. If I uncheck "Enable" for Privoxy, the "requests" continue. If I do nothing, the "requests" continue until they lock up Windows ME (it starts complaining that it doesn't have any memory left). The only workaround I have found is to close Privoxy and then start it up again. In most cases, this eliminates the problem until the next reboot (although it does occasionally return). I have not changed any of the default settings in the Privoxy files except the animation activity (which doesn't affect the behavior). A seemingly identical configuration with Privoxy 3.0.2 under Windows 98 (without FireFox) does NOT exhibit this behavior. Various things I have tried, none of which have eliminated the behavior: I tried using Privoxy 3.0.2. I tried waiting to start Privoxy until after my dial-up connection was established. I tried starting up the browser before I start Privoxy. I tried changing the port to 8228 (chosen arbitrarily). As mentioned earlier, I have used both 127.0.0.1 and localhost. I have told Opera to use the proxy only for HTTP (not HTTPS). I have searched for reports of similar problems (on sourceforge and using Google), but I have found no mention of this behavior. I would appreciate any insight.
