I am using 12 thumbnails for each page, and using this method, just 10 clicks are sufficient to jump ahead 1200 images... and the page looks very good. This approach is often used by huge image gallery sites, such as Webshots. Even if it's not as powerful as a text input box, it's much easier to understand for common users and looks nice.
