MultiCellDS is the MultiCellular Data Standard, a hierarchical XML file format for storing data for digital cell lines. We have two groupings. The first is by category of cells, say Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The second grouping is by individual representations of the digital cell line. Similar to how version control software works, we will have a master branch and at least one other branch which contains separate information. The master branch will most likely be a merge of all of the other individual branches. Thus, we want to be able to identify both the family and the individual branch. We would like to use nonnegative integers for identifying both the family and the branch. For example, the example file will have a family ID number of 3. The master branch will have ID number of 0 and the data branch here will have an ID number of 1. Thus, we have two branches 3.0 and 3.1.
