You should of course consider GPS integration, maybe with Gpsy
which can be found at http://www.gpsy.com/

I also second the touchscreen suggestion, though it may be
complicated to have it work with a lot of different types.

Other cool possibilities might be hands free mobile phone
operation and split screen operations so you can show dvd's in the
back seat while still operating the unit in the front.
