Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Hi Chris, Lance and everyone else in the group, I am interested in building up the "Configuration section". I haven't started much work on it, except the design. Now since Chris has started the ball rolling, I think I would begin work on it. I am using Web Matrix. Will my code differ than VS.NET as I haven't used VS at all. At this point of time I am sticking to the guidelines set by Lance. Regards, Irfan. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! Hello Everyone, I want to start by saying I appologize for not making this a priority, but I have been rather busy. Lance has also been very busy. I have contacted a few of you that are on this list, and some off, and now I am interested in what tasks everyone would like to take on. I have been working on payment verification. For those who are not sure what I am talking about, you can find examples at codesine.com. Currently I am working on Authorize.net. I am also integrating it into the store so the administrator can select which processor they are going to use and enter the important information such as processor user id and password. Codesine is working on a total e-commerce solution which will do something very similar to this. There solution is a pay solution, however, as are the credit card processing modules. One thing that has come to mind is that the store is going to need some sort of http handler for things like SSL for those stores that the administrator would like to keep all the sensitive data in their database. There are solutions which will not need this.(if you are unsure of what I am talking about, please go to Verisign's site and read over their very valuable information on these topics) I think it would be a great idea for those of you reading this to send back to the list what you have or will be doing. This will allow us to avoid everyone working on the same thing, or changing too many things that would affect something that others have changed also. A good start to a group project like this is to see what others have already done or what their area of expertise is. Then we can move onto who is doing what and the assigning of individual tasks. This will allow us to work as a team. I have not touched any of the code from the original download except I have added a link to my admin section on the main admin page, everything else I have done has been pretty independent from the core. As for now, unless any information stating otherwise is received from Lance, I would stick to following the guidelines Lance has set for us in all of his previous code. Like I have said in a previous email I prefer the VS with codebehind enviroment myself, but everything I am working on is done within the specs setup in the original release of the product. Perhaps at a later point I will move the code into this enviroment, but any work I am doing for the group will stay in the current format until Lance tells me otherwise. Sorry for the long email, but I had much to say. Please post to the list what you are doing, or if you are shy you can email me at cr...@at... and I will mail the list saying someone is working on this and that. Just an added reminder, that anything in the open source enviroment like this should have extremely minimal restrictions on the usage of the code and the receiving members of the code should never do anything to take the credit of others. Always give people their due credit, and never offer code to others that you don't want them using. Thanks everyone, Chris |

Hello, I want to appologize for reading the post and making an assumption about Lance without actually communicating with him. I have appologized to Lance for this, and I want to inform all of you that I was wrong. I am not sure if all of you are Americans but there is a saying that "Assumption is the mother of all f*** ups". The good news is that Lance is still heading this up. I like seeing the feedback that we are now seeing on the list, and now we just need Lance to tell us which direction we are heading. Once again, my appologies to Lance and all of you about this mix up. For anyone who is interested, I will try to tackle the credit card processing task this week. If any of you have worked with this, I ask that you mail me off the list (cr...@at...) and inform me of what you like and don't like about things you have done in the past. Of course all things go through Lance, so I will compile a list of your feedback and review it with him. Thanks, Chris |

I agree completely with Chris and hes made some good points here, unfortunately I've been working on "Web Matrix" all throughout, but I guess it won't be much of a problem arranging a copy of VS 2k3. If chris is right that Lance has given up on us, then its really bad, and yes we can surely move on. The documentation is tailored from DNN to suite us, but if there are any changes to be done according to our needs, we surely can. I am interested in taking up the Configuration section. So now since Chris has started atleast a basic discussion, lets get on it and start. Regards, Irfan. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hello all, I am writing because I am not sure what is going on with this project. I am under the impression that lance, the founder of this, has given up on us. This is due to a post I read at asp.net. If I am incorrect, I am sure lance will mail me and I will send an email correcting myself to the list. Assuming I am correct though, I still feel that we can move on. Lance has given us a great starting point to work with. I am asking that everyone who is still involved please email me and let me know that you are taking part in this. We need to break things up, and cover some basic information. One thing I would like to discuss is the documentation. It seems to me that this documentation comes from DNN. The only problem I have with that, is that it is tailored for the portal. I also would like to know if everyone here is using a version of visual studio, and which one. I would prefer to move this to a visual studio 2k3 project with 1.1 as the framework. Even if many of you are using the sdk, I do advise that we move to 1.1 because there is no reason to hang on to 1.0. I am currently taking part in the DNN project, and an issue has come up about the move from 1.0 to 1.1 which I would like to avoid here.(P.S. it's only $29 to go from VS 2002 to 2003) I strongly encourage that we start by moving everything to code behind files. I am looking for some input from all of you, so please do not hesitate to contact me. I want to get the ball rolling on this, as I know from my experience with DNN that once you start getting this going, the people will come and help you not only find all the bugs, but fix them too. Thanks everyone, Chris |

Hi Everyone, I want to thank everyone for expressing interest in helping with the project development. It seems like there have been a lot of people waiting, or wanting to develop a .Net Open Source Store. I wanted to let everyone know the status of things to try and lay a clear working foundation. First, anyone interested in actually being a listed developer on the project (via SourceForge) needs to go to Sourceforge and create a new account: https://sourceforge.net/account/register.php After you have created your account, simply send me your Sourceforge (SF) username (I have to have this in order to add you to the project. This is SF's enrollment process, not mine). Once you send me your SF username, I will add you to the list of developers. If you are interested in helping administer a particular section of our SF project page (e.g. Discussion Forum, Task Manager), please state this in your email to me. Also, please note that you do not need to be listed as a project developer on our SF project page -- https://sourceforge.net/projects/ibssopensource/ , in order to help with the project. You can still visit the SF project homepage and view the task list, discussion forum, mail archive, file releases, etc. The developer list is more of a tool to add people interested in helping me manage the project within the SF interface. Second, I am creating an initial task list - in order of priorities as I see them currently. If you would like to be assigned to any particular task and/or feel that a task needs to be added/edited, please let me know. If you have any questions, thoughts in general about the project, recommendations, etc..., please feel free to contact me. Your feedback is welcomed. Best Regards, --lance lj...@us... la...@on... |

Hi guys, I've been waiting for this, and been waiting for being a part of it. I have 4 yrs of development experience, mostly on ASP and SQL. Been working on ASP.NET since the last 8 months and have become quite addicted to it. I am a Microsoft Certified Professional, and believe in quality of code and work. Let me know in what way I can help this project grow. Regards, Irfan Rizvi. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Bingo. http://search.yahoo.com |

As promised, the Beta Version 1.0 is now available for download from Sourceforge.net. The homepage for the project is: https://sourceforge.net/projects/ibssopensource/ There was a rush to get this available for people to download immediately. If there are any problems, please let me know. Additionally, I hope that everyone who emailed me previously to express interest in this project will pitch in any way they can to help with the development of IBS Store 'Open Source'. Please contact me via the project homepage at SourceForge to officially become a project developer (I could have added everyone's email address, but didn't want to assume that everyone wanted to help with the development). Finally, I would really like some help running the SourceForge(SF) project board, mailing list, discussion forum, etc. If you are interested in helping me manage the SF project board, please let me know as I would welcome the help. If you do not want to receive any further emails from this mailing list, let me know and I will remove you from the list immediately. Best Regards, Lance Parish |
