Could be that you just have your mic set too hot, and it causes 
clipping.  Perhaps GSM deals with mild clipping better than iLBC or speex.

I posted a patch a month ago or so that did analog (mixer-based) AGC;  I 
didn't get any feedback, but I might just add it to CVS.  I think I'm 
going to use it in my builds..
