Mostly, I want a soft phone that connects to my home asterisk server from wherever without having to drag around another piece of hardware (ATA-186 or the like). If it's going to connect to an Asterisk server, it might as well use the asterisk protocol. Not having setup either, it looks to me like IAX is much simpler to configure than SIP or H.323.
