I installed the make from cygwin; the MinGW make isn't very good.

(I think I added this to the READMEs already, but maybe I haven't --
It's been a while, and, in addition to the new baby, some dolt with a
truck pulled down the phone cables to my house, so I've been totally
disconnected).
