Good luck with that.  Just to spare you some pain, I've tried Direct  
Sound, and it does improve AEC performance., but it introduces some  
other issues, such as audio under/overflows.  In addition to that,  
Portmixer doesn't work with DirectSound, so you won't have volume  
controls.
