I am a little bit hazy on the use case for Misc files, how they relate to other records etc. But I know that the following would be useful to me.
A Misc file with Type "Figure" should default to showing the figure in the description box. Currently I would have to click "Launch", which is an extra step and causes my machine to launch a third-party program.
I am planning a large-scale overhaul of the previewing functionality. This is going to (hopefully) involve removing the dependency on the JxBrowser 3rd party library (which will greatly reduce the file size of the installation binaries and prevent having to release those under a Commons Clause license), upgrading to a much more recent version of PDF.js, a redesign of the Preview window UI, and more capabilities for previewing various file types. This issue will ultimately get fixed as part of the larger project. In the meantime, I suggest clicking the Preview button instead of Launch; that will at least show the misc. file in the Preview window, which prevents a third-party program from being launched and prevents having a build-up of windows open on your computer.
