Wait a minute.  I think I've been asleep.  So the change, intended to
deal with a warning (not an error), has introduced the possibility of
an error in the default case?  I'm not sure that's progress.  Wouldn't
it have been easier to make the Makefile (the original source of the
problem) behave?
