I guess we can close this case. I rebooted the server and the problem resolved itself. FYI... The agent and server were both on the same machine (Fedora Core 5) and both 3.0.2. I am monitoring among other things SMTP services on agentless machines through the Internet.

I don't think it was a time synchronization issue, though.
