[Hyperic-hq-discuss] Group can only be in a single role?

I am trying to use the same resource group in multiple roles but it seems that a group can only be associated with a single role. Once I have added the group to a role it is no longer available to be added to other roles.

What I want to do is to define a role which contains all of the resources which belong to a single customer (platforms, servers and services). I then want to create a read-only role and an administration role for these. So I make the group (abcResources) and add to it all of customer ABCs resources. Next I create two groups. One (abcMonitor) has only View access for platforms, servers and services. The other (abcAdmin) also has Create/Modify/Delete/Alerting/Control. So now I have my group with the required resources and my read-only and configuration roles.

However once I add the group (abcResources) to one role (abcMonitor) it is no longer available in the list of groups for the next role (abcAdmin). Is this supposed to work this way or am I missing something?

Hi Murray,

That is definitely not the case.  The point is to be able to assign  
different combinations of roles to groups.  I assume that you are  
using the Enterprise trial?  Can you be more specific about the steps  
that you are taking?

I'm currently using the last Beta of the Enterprise version rather than the recently released GA version.

I have attached some screen shots to show what I'm doing. Here is the sequence of events:
- I create a group called "WebLogic" which has all my WebLogic related elements.
- I create a role called "WebLogic Administrator" which has all update capabilities (screen1 attached).
- I create another role called "WebLogic Monitor" which just has view capabilities (screen2 attached).
- I then attach the group to the monitor role (screen3 attached).
- Now when I try to add the group to the administrator role I find that there are no groups listed (screen4 attached).

I hope this adequately illustrates the problem. Please let me know if you need anything further.

Ah, yes, the screenshots help a lot.  I was able to reproduce the problem as you have described.

There does appear to be a bug here, which I will log in our Jira for Enterprise.  There is a workaround, though, you can go to the group and add the role(s) to the group.

This bug has been fixed in trunk and in the 3.0 branch.  It will be resolved with the next release of HQ.
