Why not just stick to the predefined "regex_require" method?
So rather than:

 > on_response => {
 >          $up = $webtest->current_response->content =~ /Upstream Rate
 > \(fast mode\)\D*(\d+) Kbps/

use:
...
text_require => 'showtime',
regex_require => '/Upstream Rate \(fast mode\)\D*(\d+) Kbps/',
...
