Hi Peter,
Firefox compiled by Debian is compiled without XPCOM.
The extension is an external library that need XPCOM to work.
There is currently a Debian bug in discussion.

In short, there are 2 work-around.
1) download Firefox from the Mozilla.org site. This one works.
2) type this before to start Firefox on Debian only
export LD_PRELOAD=libxpcom.so firefox
