If you are building a web application and you have code that cannot be executed by a request from a web browser then why is that code there? I'm not suggesting that you should do all your testing from the outside of the servlet container with a tool like HtmlUnit, I'm just questioning your assumptions. Why would you assume that your typical webapp would have code that *cannot* be tested from the outside? I say "like HtmlUnit" because this is really a question about testing a webapp from the outside of the servlet container by simulating a browser.
