The cookie support is all handled by commons-httpclient and it works 
fine for all the sites that I test.  How is authentication working?  Is 
it form based, basic or digest? (or something else entirely?)

When I'm debugging problems like this, I usually use a sniffer to look 
at the exact traffic going back and forth.  I use the open source 
sniffer Ethereal which is available for a whole slew of platforms -
