[htdig-dev] String copy-on-write?

Greetings all,

I'm thinking of rewriting the  String  class as a copy-on-write class.
(There seems to be a lot of excess  malloc'ing  which is making it hard
to use  mpatrol  to track down the  mifluz  errors...)

Has this idea been considered and rejected before, or just not got
around to yet?
