[htdig-dev] Simple UTF-8 support patch

Hi,

I recently had the following problem: Due to the use of a CMS some of our pages
are now UTF-8 encoded. Since we are a german university our pages may contain
german umlauts ;-) I use ht://Dig to index all servers on the campus. The
problem is/was, that we cannot find words with umlauts on those UTF-8 pages.

First workaround: add accept-charset="ISO-8859-1" to the ht://Dig search form.
Now we can find words with umlauts on old (non UTF-8)pages but not one the new
(UTF-8) pages.

Attached you'll find a patch, that does a simple UTF-8 to 8bit ASCII
conversion. All non-convertable characters are are mapped to a questionmark(?). 

ReadBody may not be the best place to add this code (and it should be added to
ReadChunkedBody as well), but it was the easiest way to achieve my goal. One
may give me a hint for a better place :-)

Hello,

reading search results of "SQL" and "SQL Berkeley DB" queries + FAQ, I 
have two questions:
1) Does any pretty version of the SQL DB indexing planning (except for 
generate special page for that)?
2) Reading maillist I have one question: why so many people would like 
to move ht://Dig from Berkeley DB to the SQL DB? How can it brings any 
benefits in speed, if any SQL server has lots of the overhead and just 
didn't suit well for inverted index store? Or present SQL DBs can be 
really faster than BDB?

works then it could be an issue with your http server permissions.

[htdig-dev] single quote in a searched text.

HI,

When I type keyword that I want to search and click on
search button, I get error popup

"A runtime error has occurred.

When I viewed the code on looked at the line # 49

I saw that there was extra single quote (') between
the start and end of the line.
But that extra quote is a part of test (E.g.
Customer's or that's )

How can I avoid this?

Is there is any htdig setting?

[htdig-dev] How do i know if libstdc++ is installed

Hi all,
I am having a wee bit of trouble installing htdig. I am pretty new to 
Linux but am keen to learn
I am following the install instructions and downloaded the tar file, 
extracted them and am up to the 'configure' part.
It says :  error: To compile ht://Dig, you will need a C++ library. Try 
installing libstdc++.
So i went off to get libstdc which i think is now bundled in GCC so i 
got gcc-3.2.3-49.src.rpm and installed that
re-ran configure just to get the same message.

How can i tell if libstdc is installed properly? also i read on a 
DevShed article that there is a problem and you have to use:
CXXFLAGS=-Wno-deprecated CPPFLAGS=-Wno-deprecated ./configure

Which i tried and couldn't get working either.

I can run htdig and htsearch from the command line but can't get 
htsearch runnign through the browser.

oh btw i am used the lastest tar file from the htdig site which is 
htdig-3.1.6.tar.gz so i am running 3.1.6

In the start_url you are using 'letter' and in the directory names you 
are using 'letters'. Is this just an email typo? If not, then there is 
likely a problem with the above configuration. Aside from that, this 
should work if there is something at the start_url that will allow htdig 
to follow links to the content in the set1letters and set2letters 
directories.

The above looks reasonable. I would suggest that once you have the files 
indexed you drop in a couple test pages with the above settings and use 
those to verify that queries return the results you intend.

This is not a secure approach, if that is relevant. It would be trivial 
for someone who knows about either search form to craft an HTTP request 
that would allow them to search both letter sets . Especially with the 
exclude attribute added, which tells anyone who looks at the page source
what you are trying to hide from them.

Currently we are using htdig search engine. In
htdig.conf the start_url is configured as 
start_url 
http://localhost:8080/apps/letter/set1letters/

As you can see htdig will use
/apps/letter/set1letters/ to index.

So this will be searched by set1users using one search
form.

Now we have another set of users who wants to search
the letters located at set2letters.
set2letters is located under /apps/letter/

So the dir structure is 
	/apps/letters/set1letters
	/apps/letters/set2letters

We will be giving them separate form where they can
search the letters from set2letters only.
set1letters user are allowed to search their letters
from set1letters only.

So to this change, I did following changes.

1) modify htdig.conf for start_url
set start_url to http://localhost:8080/apps/letter/
So it should index 
	/apps/letters/set1letters
	/apps/letters/set2letters

2) set the restrict and exclude properties for first
set of users as following
	<form action="http://localhost/cgi-bin/htsearch"
method="post" target="_blank" name="lettersearch">
	<input type="hidden" name="config" value="htdig">

Hi,

We are using htdig as a search engine on Linux based
server.
We have one application path where all the documents
that we want to be searched by application are
located. 
	E.g. /TOMCAT_HOME/letters/userletter

Currently we have one htdig.conf file and the
start_url is pointing to the
/TOMCAT_HOME/letters/userletter

Now we are developing another application. This
application will search all the documents 
located at different location on the same server. E.g.
/TOMCAT_HOME/letters/myletter

Can anyone help me to get this task resolved? I am new
to htdig.

Also to Do this, Do I need second instance of htdig? 
or Can I use the same instance of htdig to search and
index multiple documents/sites?

It will be really help, if you could send us some
sample files.

Please help us to get this resolved

  Your htdigphp.so library has no HtDig code in it...

  Check the libhtdigphp/modules directory for a file 
named 'libhtdigphp.so.3.2.x'.  Use this file instead.

  Run 'nm libhtdigphp.so.3.2.x |\grep htsearch_get_nth_match' on that file 
and make sure that both htsearch_get_nth_match have a 'T' beside them.. 
this means they exist in the library.  'U' means that the symbol is 
unresolved.

  The relink script builds the libhtdigphp.so.3.2.x library... the make 
command builds the default htdigphp.so.

  An alternative would be to edit the Makefile and add a link reference to 
libhtdig.so.xxxx so that htdigphp.so depends on libhtdig.so.xxxx.

  I wrote relink to build a one-piece shared library 
(libhtdigphp.so.xxxx), easier to deal with for Apache.

Please try the htdig_search.php file.

At the top of this file (and htdig.php) there is a bit of code which will 
spit out what functions are availiable from PHP in the library.  Should 
look like this:

What do you see?

I learn a lot with contributions, you never know if it is what you were
looking for until you try it. And probably developers get sharper when
people run their codes. And PHP querying directly the index? that enough to
make the test.

I tried this and didn't work, anyway I put HTDIG_DIR=/path/to/libhtdig in
configure and everything run ok.

I edited relink.sh and I got htdigphp.so in /module ready for use.
I copy htdigphp.so to /usr/lib/php4/ (where my php libs are)

I have setup a local mirror for htdig website on http://htdig.trexle.com
The mirror is being updated daily using wget, after I suffered a lot of 
timeout troubles with cvs. Please list it as an official mirror in the 
original htdig website and let me hear your thoughts.

Roger,
	This is not a required library to use HtDig.  It's main use is if 
you want to write a PHP page to query the index built with HtDig (or a 
program which calls libhtdig functions).

	Basically the configure in libhtdigphp was altered from the 
'libbz' module that can be built in PHP.

	./configure --with-htdig=xxxx 

Where xxx   your-htdig-dir/libhtdig

	After configure you will have to run 'make' which compile 
htdigphp.c and fail onthe link.

	Edit relink.sh and change the references to your own directories 
and run it.  You should have a one-piece library libhtdigphp.so which you 
can use from PHP code.  It's basically a wrapper library for libhtdig.

	I haven't bothered to clean this up as you are the first person to 
report trying to build it.

	I probably need to ditchthe configure and have a simple makefile 
with clear instructions for various path strings to make the process 
more friendly.

	htdig_search.php contains example code to query the index.
