There are at least a couple issues related to the maximum file size. The first is ht://Dig's direct handling of on-disk files, which is the one in play here. The db.wordlist.work file is a text file directly handled with system calls such as fopen(). Since the ht://Dig package isn't compiled with largefile support by default, such access is affected by the 2 GB limit. A couple people have reported that adding '-D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64' has successfully provided a workaround for the limit on db.wordlist. The second issue is one of support at the Berkeley DB level. The version provided with 3.1.6 doesn't provide support for large files under Linux. There is an --enable-bigfile, but its support is limited to AIX, HP/UX, and Solaris. Some time ago attempts were made to force the option for a Linux build, but it was reported that the attempts were unsuccessful. A more recent post implied that the limit at the BDB level is 4 GB. So by building ht://Dig with largefile support you can most likely bypass problem with limits on the size of db.wordlist. However there will still be a limit on the size of the actual databases (presumably 4 GB). Jim |

(Please note that everything added here should have a tracker PR# so we can be sure they're fixed. Geoff is currently trying to add PR#s for what's currently here.) SHOWSTOPPERS: KNOWN BUGS: (none serious. See <http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?atid=104593&group_id=4593&func=browse>.) PENDING PATCHES (available but need work): * Gilles's configuration parsing patches need testing before committing. * Memory improvements to htmerge. (Backed out b/c htword API changed.) * Mifluz merge. (Is this still pending??) NEEDED FEATURES: * Quim's new htsearch/qtest query parser framework. * File/Database locking. PR#405764. TESTING: * httools programs: (htload a test file, check a few characteristics, htdump and compare) * Tests for new config file parser * Duplicate document detection while indexing * Major revisions to ExternalParser.cc, including fork/exec instead of popen, argument handling for parser/converter, allowing binary output from an external converter. * ExternalTransport needs testing of changes similar to ExternalParser. DOCUMENTATION: * List of supported platforms/compilers is ancient. (PR#405279) * Document all of htsearch's mappings of input parameters to config attributes to template variables. (Relates to PR#405278.) Should we make sure these config attributes are all documented in defaults.cc, even if they're only set by input parameters and never in the config file? * Split attrs.html into categories for faster loading. * Turn defaults.cc into an XML file for generating documentation and defaults.cc. * require.html is not updated to list new features and disk space requirements of 3.2.x (e.g. regex matching, database compression.) PRs# 405280 #405281. * Htfuzzy could use more documentation on what each fuzzy algorithm does. PR#405714. * Document the list of all installed files and default locations. PR#405715. OTHER ISSUES: * Can htsearch actually search while an index is being created? * The code needs a security audit, esp. htsearch. PR#405765. |

For the PDF error, please make sure that the PDF document in question can have text extracted from it. Download the file and run pdf2html.pl on it. If that works make sure that max_doc_size is bigger than the PDF document. (it looks like it is). Not all PDFs have text in them. Some PDFs are images of text. You can read them on the screen, but there are no characters/words in the PDF to extract and index. As for the second error, try putting these in your htdig.conf file. wordlist_compress: false wordlist_compress_zlib: false We have a mystery bug in the BDB code. Hello, this is just an informative mail on what will be in Debian Sarge. Debian Sarge will have a package called 'htdig', which is the htdig 3.1.6. version (with various patches, etc), see the changelog. I started to package 'htdig3.2' (which is in fact 3.2.0b6), but that did not make it into Debian Sarge. In fact it is not even on the server yet. The package in Sarge will be htdig_3.1.6-10 Htdig3.2 will not be in Sarge. If you still think that providing htdig3.2 packages that run with debian sarge is important, these could be provided on the htdig website. Robert |

There appears to be a significant problem with the current SSL support in htdig. I have spent some time tracking down the source of a problem reported earlier this month (bug reports 1011830 and 1011769). It appears that the bug responsible for this problem is in SSLConnection::Read_Partial (htnet/SSLConnection.cc). The Read_Partial method employs a select() to watch for activity on the socket, however this is not a reliable approach for handling an SSL connection. Since SSL is record based, an SSL_read() may pull more bytes of data from the socket than specified by the provided arguments. When this happens, the extra data is removed from the socket and placed in an internal SSL buffer. As the code is currently written, this can lead to a state where the process is waiting in a select() for data that has already been read and is currently sitting in the SSL internal buffer. A timeout then occurs on the select() and the SSL_read() is skipped since it appears that no data is available. This repeats a number of times specified by the max_retries attribute and then htdig gives up and reports 'connection down'. I believe the solution involves adding an SSL_pending() call to check for data in the SSL internal buffer. One option would be to wrap the block of code handling the select() so that it is only entered when the internal buffer is empty. For example, if (!SSL_pending(ssl)) { if (timeout_value > 0) { FD_SET_T fds; FD_ZERO(&fds); FD_SET(sock, &fds); timeval tv; tv.tv_sec = timeout_value; tv.tv_usec = 0; int selected = select(sock+1, &fds, 0, 0, &tv); if (selected <= 0) { need_io_stop++; } } } This change stood up to some very limited testing that I performed, but this is the first time I have touched SSL code so I have no great confidence in this being "the" solution. Comments? Jim |

I'm finding that several things are wierd in the htdig/HTML.cc class 1) If a page has an ill-formed comment tag like this: <!-- hennerik CVSweb $Revision: 1.64 0-> Everything after the start of the comment is eaten.. the entire page.. since the comment end is bad. A browser handles this fine. 2) In the HTML::parse function 223 unsigned char *text = (unsigned char *)new char[contents->length()+1]; This variable seems intended to store the document contents. However both times it's used as a RHS of an anssignment statment: 224 unsigned char *ptext = text; [snip] 380 position = text; 381 start = position; 382 383 while (*position) 384 { Note that the while statement (lines 384 to 545) is likely never entered since gcc seems to initialize text to zeros on Linux. The behavior could be platform dependent since who knows what's in that memory. Any feedback? Thanks Neal Richter Knowledgebase Developer RightNow Technologies, Inc. This doesn't look like an issue to me if all we need to do is add the following to the GPL license: * In addition, as a special exception, the copyright holders give * permission to link the code of portions of this program with the * OpenSSL library under certain conditions as described in each * individual source file, and distribute linked combinations * including the two. * You must obey the GNU General Public License in all respects * for all of the code used other than OpenSSL. If you * do not wish to do so, delete this exception statement from your * version. If you delete this exception statement from all source * files in the program, then also delete it here. I'll raise this issue on the members list and get back to you. FYI: I never heard back from Kevin Ruddy @ Powerdog on our strptime.c conflict. Hi list.. as the debian maintainer of htdig I am responsible for its presence in debian, but I am also the first-hand support guy to contact when there is a bug. A while ago, there was the enable htdig to support SSL ('https') requests, which to my knowledge is only possible using the OpenSSL library. Htdig 3.1.6 is license under the GPL, V2, the 3.2.0 branch will sail under LGPL.. While this is technically no problem, there seem to be licensing issues. Could you look at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=133086 and tell me whether it would be possible to find a solution similar to http://www.gnome.org/~markmc/openssl-and-the-gpl.html Thanks Robert |

Hi - The only obvious difference I see is that I used cvs.sourceforge.net where you are using cvs.htdig.sourceforge.net. Below is a copy and paste of what I just used for a successful checkout (about five minutes ago). cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/htdig login (<return> at password prompt) cvs -z3 -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/htdig co htdig Jim On Fri, 13 Aug 2004, J. op den Brouw wrote: > Hi, could you tell me what you did. It's public available on: http://mirror.internet.tp/htdig/maindocs/ Kind regards, Pelle Boese. -- Quidquid latinum dictum sit, altum viditur. "Mea navicula pendens anguillarum plena est." Hi, could you tell me what you did. I used: cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/htdig login (needed to login first), and it doesn't work. Hello List, I have packaged and submitted the 'htdig' package for the inclusion in Sarge. This is currently the 3.1.6 release witth all the paches that seemed reasonable to include. It will enter Sarge as Version '3.1.6-9' or later (-9 being the Debian Revision), or perhaps with a higher debian revision, depends a bit if I find a few more bugs I can easily fix. At the moment I am in the process of perparing the 3.2.0b6 package (that should enter Sarge as package 'htdig3.2'). According to a debian package control tool (lintian), I still have the following problems: - HTFileType, htdb_dump and htdb_load, htdb_stat lack a manpage I haven't found any infos on those programs so far, so how can I write a manual page about them? - More or less all compiled binaries define an rpath (which imay pose a problem). Getting rid of the rpath means modifying the build process (the generation of libtool..). Is it possible to do that for all 'linux/unix-like' installations, or is there any installation out there that relies on that rpath? I think in other linux diustributions ir will be as much of a problem, even if they may have a leaner policy towards it Yours Robert |

Greetings Claus, Thanks for your perseverence, and for mirroring ht://Dig! Someone might already have updated it, but currently the mirroring instructions at <http://www.htdig.org/howto-mirror.html> suggest emailing the address you have just used. What addresses did you try previously?
