Hi, Chris. The scan buttons on the device aren't currently supported, so for now scanning can only be initiated from the PC (i.e. SANE). Be sure to read the sane-hp man page, especially the section on the OfficeJet K series, which also applies to the V series. It explains the extra steps you need to take in order to scan successfully with these models (clicking on "Change document" and "Unload document" at the right times). With xsane you'll probably need to bring up some sort of "advanced options" window to get to these buttons.
