You're right about the functionality.  The functionality I'm looking for is
at a minimum, a "make" process that will put everything in appropriate
directories and configure the system so that things will work
"out-of-the-box" (with only a few minor manual changes like print spooler
and sane configuration). Above that, having init scripts and binary packages
for major distributions.
