I haven't worked for HP, but I did have access to a similar service system. I was asked not to divulge it, and I don't plan to. When I viewed the settings that could be changed, I could see that although some options could be useful if they could be easily changed, some of them looked like they could really foul up the device, rendering it unusable, and necessitating a lengthy call to tech support, which probably would have to refer the problem to some higher tier. Obviously (to me) it could be a very expensive mistake for a technology company to give untrained users easy access to settings that are meant only for factory setup or by trained technicians in a repair facility. In many locations, there will be curious kids (and others) who want to know how everything works, and love to push buttons. I'm pretty sure that a great many printers would be repeatedly (sometimes deliberately) fouled up once this kind of info were made public. The cost of the resulting tech support calls and eventual lost sales would be passed on to customers. I don't think we want that. -- Joe Piolunek |
